Chief Superintendent Rachel Barber took over as Head of Operational Support Services in November 2012. The department which provides specialist police response to the communities in South Yorkshire includes firearms, public order, air support, specialist search teams, mounted, dogs, roads policing, accident investigation, traffic management, contingency and operational planning, Force communications centre, crime recording, road safety and family liaison.
Since joining South Yorkshire Police in 1988, Chief Supt Barber has worked in a number of different operational roles at all ranks, along with specialised roles such as Staff Officer to the Chief Constable, Force Inspections and national planning for G8 summit in Scotland in 2005.
In addition to her day job, Chief Supt Barber is a Firearms and Public Order Commander, and has played a major role in developing the football policing operations for the two Sheffield Clubs and more latterly across the force. Her interest in Football Policing has resulted in her also being one of only 3 UK Commanders responsible for assisting the police services of host countries when the England National Team play abroad.
Chief Supt Barber has a BSc (Hons) First class in Social Sciences with Social Policy from the Open University.
