Police increase patrols in Elsecar after serious sexual assault

Police and partners have stepped up patrols following a serious sexual assault on Thursday, 24 June, at the Dearne Valley Trail near to Elsecar Reservoir.

A 37-year-old, local man has been arrested in connection with the incident and released on bail until mid-September while further enquiries are made.

Meanwhile, officers are still appealing for anyone with information or those who can identify an e-fit of the suspect (see below) to contact police immediately.

Said Sergeant Darren Taylor, from Hoyland Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT): "We'd like to reassure people that we're doing everything we can to trace the offender. Incidents like this are rare in and around Elsecar and as this assault occurred in a public area, we're hoping that someone may have witnessed something.

"Officers from Hoyland SNT will continue to focus policing in the area and deal with any issues of concern from local people surrounding the matter.

“Since the incident, police have been carrying out daily high-visibility patrols at the Dearne Valley Trail and Elsecar Reservoir areas at various times throughout the day. South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue has also been assisting by conducting cycle patrols to provide extra reassurance."
