Police statement regarding Kimberworth firearm allegations

At around 9.30am this morning, Friday, 16 July, a man reported to police that he had been threatened by someone known to him near to an address in the Kimberworth area of Rotherham.

Further reports were received from members of the public nearby that describe an argument between the two men, both of whom are known to police, one apparently in possession of what looked like a firearm.

Officers believe that at no stage during this incident was anyone threatened with a weapon. There is no suggestion a firearm was discharged and no one has been reported injured.

Police take such reports very seriously. Local officers and specialist firearms officers responded quickly and enquiries are ongoing to trace the man alleged to be in possession of a firearm.

Since the time of the incident this morning, messages have been posted on Facebook speculating about this incident. Police would like to emphasise that reports of a shooting in the area are not true and there is no suggestion that this man poses a threat to the general public.

Officers are in the Kimberworth area speaking to local residents, offering additional visibility and reassurance to the local community.

Officers will look to provide further updates but are currently appealing for anyone with information concerning this incident to call South Yorkshire Police on 0114 2202020, or in an emergency dial 999.
