Witness appeal after vehicle failed to stop on M1 southbound

South Yorkshire Police are appealing for information after extensive damage was caused to a white Volkswagen Golf on the M1 on Sunday morning.

At 10.30am on Sunday, 19 February, near Woodall Services, a white VW Golf was travelling on the northbound carriageway of the M1 in lane 3. A second vehicle, possibly a small white van, was towing a box trailer and travelling southbound at the same location.

The nearside wheel and hub of the trailer came off it, bounced across the central reservation and hit the front of the white VW Golf, causing extensive damage.

The second vehicle, possibly a van with amber lights on the roof, pulled onto the hard shoulder, the driver detached the trailer from the vehicle and drove off, abandoning the trailer on the hard shoulder.

The trailer is described as white with blue tarpaulin top with black tape. It could be homemade.

The 65-year-old male driver of the car was from Notts and was not injured in the incident.

Officers would like to trace the driver of second vehicle so would like to hear from anyone who may know who this is. Police would also like to appeal for witnesses who saw the collision or actions afterwards.

Trailer left at scene of M1 collision

Anyone with information is asked to call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 410 of the 19 February.
