Police fleet link-up on target to save region £7m

A money-saving regional fleet programme is on target to save police forces in Yorkshire and the Humber more than £7 million.
 
A number of cost-cutting initiatives have been introduced after the four forces were set a savings target of £10m over five years.
 
Heads of Transport at North Yorkshire Police, West Yorkshire Police, South Yorkshire Police and Humberside Police joined forces to establish a more collaborative way of working which has helped to keep vehicle maintenance, vehicle conversions and training costs in house.

New regional police e-crime hubs to tackle threat of cyber crime

The UK police capability to tackle the growing threat of cyber crime was strengthened today with the announcement of three regional policing e-crime hubs.

The new hubs, in Yorkshire and the Humber, the Northwest and in East Midlands, will be launched at the ACPO e-crime conference in Sheffield today. Cyber crime has been identified in the National Security Risk Assessment as a ‘tier one’ threat alongside international terrorism, an international military crisis, and a major accident or natural hazard requiring a national response.

Volunteering to look after the vulnerable at night in Doncaster Town Centre

Special Constables from South Yorkshire Police, volunteers from Street Pastors and paramedics from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service have all joined forces to provide immediate assistance to people in Doncaster town centre on a Friday and Saturday night.

Twenty three year old man sentenced to 14 and a half years for robbery in Doncaster

A 23-year-old man has been sentenced to 14 and a half years for robbery.

Ricky Langford was sentenced for robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery, of which he must serve at least seven years and three months.

On Sunday, 3 April, 2011, at approximately 10.45pm, Langford and another man, Kyle Roberts, 25, attempted to gain entry to a property on Morley Road, Conisbrough.

South Yorkshire Police extend stolen vehicle reporting initiative with Hallam FM

South Yorkshire Police and Hallam FM have extended the trial of a joint initiative in the fight against car thieves.

The initiative, originally planned to run between 3 January and 3 February, involves officers from South Yorkshire Police’s control room supplying Hallam FM with the details of cars that have been reported recently stolen. The presenters of Hallam FM then report the details asking listeners to report sightings of the vehicles.

The initiative will now run until the end of March.

Stranded Dronfield hikers rescued by South Yorkshire Police Air Operations Unit

Two hikers from Dronfield had to be rescued on Friday, 3 February, by South Yorkshire Police’s Air Operations Unit after they found themselves in difficulty and stranded near Kinder Downfall waterfall in the Kinder Scout area of the Derbyshire Peak District.

South Yorkshire Police received a phone call shortly after 6pm on Friday from a friend of the couple who informed the operator that the pair were not injured but unable to make their way from the peak because of the conditions.

Thurnscoe murder - local man charged

A 36-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Philip Alan Smith.

Gary McKeown, from Thurnscoe, will appear before Barnsley Magistrates’ Court tomorrow morning (Saturday, 4 February).  

Thirty-six-year-old Philip Smith, also from Thurnscoe, was found injured in Church Street, Thurnscoe, around 4.30pm on Saturday 28 January, after a disturbance near the junction with Houghton Road. He was taken to Barnsley District General Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Justice for Sheffield dad as killer jailed

A MAN who killed a Sheffield dad and former workmate has today been jailed for 26 years at Sheffield Crown Court.

 

Hassan Maruf, aged 20, from Hampton Road, Fir Vale, was found guilty after a week-long trial of the murder of Zabihullah Rafiq in the early hours of 29 May, 2011.

 

Thirty-year-old Zabi was making his way home from work when he was stabbed - just yards away from his flat at Callow Mount, Gleadless - and left for dead. A post mortem found that Zabi had died from a stab wound to the chest.

 

Doncaster couple sentenced for money laundering and counterfeiting offences

 A couple from the Bessacarr area of Doncaster have been sentenced for money laundering and counterfeit goods offences. Philip Cummings and Sarah Hutchinson appeared at Doncaster Crown Court on Friday, 13 January. Cummings was sentenced to 15 months in prison while Hutchinson received a 9-month sentence, suspended for two years.

Consider others when travelling through roadworks

The South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership is urging drivers to be considerate to other road users and road workers when travelling through roadworks.

With ever increasing volumes of traffic associated with modern living the maintenance of our roads becomes more frequent and necessary. The various agencies involved in the repair of our roads do so under increasingly difficult circumstances and, although not always obvious, make every effort to minimise disruption that may be caused.
