Superintendent Simon Wanless joined South Yorkshire Police in December 1998 and was stationed at West Bar before moving to Attercliffe. Supt Wanless became a public order trainer and public order tactical advisor and was promoted to Sergeant in March 2005. He moved to Woodseats and then Moss Way in Sheffield, before becoming the Woodthorpe Safter Neighbourhood Team Sergeant.
In October 2010, he was promoted to Inspector, then moved to Barnsley and became a Public Order Bronze Commander. He was deployed to the London Riots in 2011 for the first nine days.
He then moved on to become a Public Order Silver Ccommander and whilst working as a Temporary Chief Inspector, was responsible for the planning and delivery of the Tour de France Grand Depart as it finished in Sheffield.
Supt Wanless was promoted to Chief Inspector in 2015 and moved back to Attercliffe, working with Partnerships and Tasking Teams
In July 2017 he was promoted to the Operational Support Unit and is happy to have the opportunity to help reshape the way the force is supported from the centre by specialist resources.
