Training and development

Special Constabulary Officer making a note in pocket book

Your training will consist of three modules and will include powers of arrest, common crimes and how to prepare your evidence for court. You will also learn self-defence, techniques for dealing with awkward situations and first aid.

Training is classroom based initially and consists ofweekend and evening sessions at the Police Training Centre at Manvers. The training then continues under the supervision of a safer neighbourhood team, carrying out operational police work based in the district where you ask to be stationed.

Further training is then given at the Training Centre and is ongoing within your district. Sometimes for operational reasons, we may not be able to place you at the district of your choice.

You'll learn new and develop existing skills, like problem-solving, negotiating, decision-making, coping with pressure, communications and inter-personal skills. These skills will help you not only as a special but also in your daily life.

There are several grades within the specials. As with regulars, promotion is achieved through good performance, dedication to duty and proof of leadership qualities and a robust and transparent interview process.
