Independent Advisory Group

Date published: 26 April 2023 14:11

Welcome

The independent Advisory Groups (IAGs) are a way for our communities to work with us to help improve our services.  They advise on policing issues that may cause concern to local people and communities.

IAG members are volunteers from our communities and from various backgrounds who have an interest in policing, and its effect on our communities and offer independent advice.

What is the purpose of an IAG?

IAGs have a vital role in helping us build trust, confidence and better relationships, especially with our diverse communities and help ensure our policing style reflects the needs of the communities.

Aims of the IAG:

  • To provide constructive independent advice to the police about better delivery of their service.
  • To enable South Yorkshire Police to develop policies and procedures that are accessible and transparent.
  • To act as a ‘critical friend’ to South Yorkshire Police in all aspects of interaction between police and the local communities.
  • To build trust, confidence and better relationships, especially with our diverse communities.

What’s involved in becoming an IAG member?

Who can join: We are keen to expand membership of the IAGs. We would like to hear from people from a variety of different backgrounds, gender, disability, age, race, religion/belief and sexual orientation.

What does it involve: IAG members are expected to represent their communities and be willing and capable of engaging them effectively. The IAGs meet every three months in the evenings.  From time to time South Yorkshire Police may seek the involvement of members of the IAGs outside of the meetings to look at other themes that’s been raised for the IAGs to scrutinise. (Due to COVID-19 further IAG meetings are either postponed or conducted via Zoom )
