Welcome message from the Neighbourhood Inspector Peter Spratt
Hi, I am Inspector Peter Spratt. I cover the Central, North and North East Wards. There are three neighbourhood teams that cover each of these ward areas, working from three different police stations.
I have over 14 years’ experience as a police officer and have previously spent a significant part of my career within neighbourhood policing in Sheffield. I am delighted to have been posted to Barnsley since May 2021; it is evident that our officers are driven by a desire to make a real difference in the communities they serve, creating a safer and more enjoyable environment for those who live and work here. It is also exciting to see the level of investment in Barnsley, particularly in the regeneration of the town centre.
Neighbourhood policing has great benefits, it enables us to work closely with the public, community groups, partner agencies and businesses to be able to reduce crime and solve re-occurring and community issues. Please be sure to contact your local teams and follow us on social media, to stay informed with what we are doing and engagement events running in your community to come and speak to us. This will enable us to be part of the community and adapt problem solving approaches to local issues.
The current priorities for the Barnsley North Neighbourhood Policing Team are:
Barugh Green recreational ground - tackle Anti-Social Behaviour
Honeywell - Reduce Anti-Social Behaviour and drug use
Darton East and West - improve road safety by education and enforcement
There is an address on this street that is having regular parties with teenagers getting drunk and being anti-social." You also reported some serious criminal offences
We carried out an Anti Social Behaviour survey, obtained evidence, conducted regular patrols and visits to the address. We provided support to the occupant(s) from partner agencies. We served notices to prevent young teens attending the address, and served a Community Protection Notice to the occupant. We then worked with partners and housing agencies before we then provided evidence to the courts and obtained a Partial Closure order for 3 months. This prevents anyone from attending the address other than authorised, named people. Since obtaining this order there have been no further reports of criminality or anti-social behaviour.
We are concerned about the safety of our roads, due to speeding vehicles
We conducted a number of vehicle check sites, Operation Slowdown sites (designed to educate road users who speed), seized a number of vehicles for driving offences and worked with Safer Camera Partnership staff to identify new sites for the speed camera van to deploy.
We are getting fed up of the Anti-social Behaviour of some of the children using Barugh Green Recreation ground. This includes criminal damage and abusive language
We increased our patrols, worked with local residents and Barnsley Council to review the layout of the park and create some natural obstacles to remove the likelihood of confrontations with the children.
You wanted easier access to SmartWater/crime prevention products.
Door to door enquiries issuing free Smartwater kits, with now over 400 kits issued to date.
Following concerns raised by members of the community in the Darton West area both your local PC’S and PCSO’S have been active in the area issuing free Smartwater kits and registering them over the past few weeks. This has been an initiative that SYP have been involved with in the Barnsley area since January 2020.
There has been great feedback from members of the public and we are more than happy to distribute the kits to those that would benefit the most. We have also been working closely with our colleagues at South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service to ensure that all streets that have received Smartwater have all the relevant Operation Shield signage is in place. At present we have issued over 377 kits.
Cars are driving above the speed limit on many roads in our area – including: Staincross Common, Darton Lane, Spark Lane, Barugh Lane, Paddock Road, Rowland Road,Carr Green Lane, Bence Lane and Paddock Road.
We have secured use of a portable speed detection device. Periodically this will be moved around our area based on demand. Barnsley Council are looking to purchase two for the district.
