Police officers work a 40 hour week on a shift pattern consisting of early shift, late shifts, night shifts, bank holidays and weekends. Operational demands may require your rostered shift / rest days to be cancelled or re-scheduled at short notice.
What will I be paid while I am training to be a police officer and studying?

Where a PCDA constable's first 12 months of service has not been satisfactory, they will remain on the same salary as when they entered the service.

What is the criteria for enhanced salary?
Candidates must be able to demonstrate either:
Qualifications / accreditation in one of the following (evidenced during the application process via job history and qualifications / education):
- Investigation
- Specialist - firearms / counter terrorism
- Teaching / adult education
- Special Constable who has IPS
- Prison Service
- PCSO with more than 18 months service
OR
Exceptional quality in the following competencies (evidenced during the interview process):
- Community - we are collaborative
- Leadership and management - we deliver support and inspire
- Problem solving - we are innovative and open minded
I will be taking a pay cut is there any support you can offer?
Yes, applicants who can demonstrate they have taken a reduction in salary on starting training and require assistance with living accommodation costs up to £2,345 per annum per year up to three years.
When can I take holidays and time off work?
You will not be able to book any time off during the initial training period.
You are entitled to 22 days paid annual holiday, rising to 30 days a year depending on your length of service plus bank holidays.
Once I have passed my probation, are there opportunities for career development and promotion?
Yes, you will be supported to develop throughout your career. There are a wealth of opportunities as a police officer including promotions through the ranks or lateral moves into specialist teams such as firearms, dog unit and CID.
Will I have to deal with confrontation?
Yes. You will receive training to enable you to deal with confrontation effectively. Police officers are regularly faced with differing levels of confrontation and it is an area in which you need to demonstrate your ability before you are allowed to go out on independent patrol.
